About Geogypsy

Also known as the Geogypsytraveler my summers are spent at Grand Canyon National Park's North Rim as a Park Ranger and winter could find me anywhere in the world where it's Not cold. In the meantime, there's life.

Stormy drive through Northern Arizona

I drive four hours, each way, to shop when living on the North Rim during the summer.  And during August monsoons that can mean a stormy drive with the sky an ever changing show. Rain along SR89 Arizona Along the Painted Desert I can see a storm coming from far away. Rain Painted Desert SR89 Arizona And of course I see the storm while it’s dumping on me. Stormy sky over Vermilion & Echo Cliffs SR89 Arizona Still rather gray approaching the Vermilion and Echo Cliffs. Stormy sky over Colorado River from Navajo Bridge Marble Canyon Arizona A dry stop at Navajo Bridge shows more storm across the sky. Stormy side mirror view SR89A Arizona

But continuing towards the Kaibab Plateau I seem to be leaving the storm behind. House Rock Valley SR89A Arizona With almost clear sky over House Rock Valley. Clouds over the meadows SR67 South Kaibab National Forest Arizona Then hard to say if it will stay away once driving across the meadows.  Almost home.

First color

This is the first color I’ve seen at sunset since my return to Yarnell almost two weeks ago.  That’s because the wonderful fall skies have been a typical cloudless brilliant blue so sunset has been uneventful.

Crazy clouds over Weaver Mts Yarnell Arizona

But I knew when these crazy bunch of clouds began to glow as the sun retreated below the ridge that a show was forthcoming.

Then the first color was rather subdued although nicely accenting the gossamer clouds.

Yet the lower sun bounced off the building clouds highlighting their bubbly shapes.

Followed by, low and behold, an eruption of rays.

And a golden dance upon the ridge top that bid the day adieu.

The clouds, a sign that winter approaches.

Grand Canyon sunset with Symphony of the Canyons

Symphony of the Canyons North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona 2013

Look and listen.  It’s hard to improve on a Grand Canyon sunset with Symphony of the Canyons.

Every August since 1995 the Kanab Symphony performs at the North Rim’s Grand Lodge.  Made up of members both young and old, pharmacist Kortney Stirland has led musicians from Kanab and surrounding communities for 25 years entertaining around the world.

Here’s a clip of Amazing Grace played at the North Rim August 2013.

Last sunset of the season from Cape Royal Grand Canyon

Sunset from Cape Royal North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Knowing the road would be closed the next day I rushed out after work to experience and photograph the last sunset of the season from Cape Royal, a most excellent viewpoint of Grand Canyon from the North Rim.

Not even taking time to change clothes, I threw a pink top on with my green uniform pants.

Turned out not to be the best disguise as I’d sent several visitors out there ahead of me so they knew I am a Ranger.

No matter, this sunset put on a Grand show for everyone.

And I hung out to the very end.

Yes, it’s a bummer that visitors and employees will not be able to drive to this overlook, but then roads do have to be repaved once in a while.  Plus there are several other viewpoints still accessible before the road closure like Point Imperial, Vista Encantada and Roosevelt Point where the road block is set.

Happy Father’s Day to my dearly departed Dad

Happy Father’s Day Dad, I miss you.

Gail & Ray Jan 1956 Spring Rd Hinsdale IL

You spoiled me like only a Dad can do.  I was your little angel.  I rode on your shoulders which gave me a different perspective of the world.

Ray & Gail June 1956 Chicago IL

You took me to work on Saturdays when the shop wasn’t open to work on the family car.  Then we’d stop for ice cream on the way home.  Just you and me.

boat on the Illinois River

You loved cars and boats so on summer weekends the family would go boating on nearby lakes or rivers.  You taught me to water ski, and when to let go of the rope.  You took us camping and showed me a beautiful natural world.

1968 Mercury Cyclone Cobra Jet

You bought my first, second and third car.  The last a muscle-car, 1968 Mercury Cyclone Cobra jet, I think fulfilled your desire for a race car.  I had the fastest girl-car in High School.  You taught me how to fix most things on my vehicles.

Gail & Ray April 1956 Spring Rd Hinsdale Illinois

You didn’t know how to say, “I love you” any other way than buy things.  Probably because you had never heard that said when growing up and didn’t have money for things.

Ray & Gail wedding Morton Arboretum Lisle Illinois

You gave me away at my wedding and told my husband not to bring me back but you always welcomed me home when I needed you.

Dad at my birthday in Texas

You were a quiet man, rarely raising your voice but when you did I knew to listen.  You taught me to be self sufficient and independent while also knowing when to ask for help.

Thank you.  I know you loved me and I miss you every day.
