An ode to sunset

An ode to sunset

Sunset Yarnell Arizona

Twas the night before Thanksgiving

and the sky was clouded in

who knew if there’d be bright colors

or the sky would just be dim

Sunset Yarnell Arizona

Upon closer inspection

soft peaches spread on rye

with some kind of sweeping up

rather pleasing to the eye

Sunset Yarnell Arizona

Then only moments later

the sky began to glow

a bend occurred at ridgeline

where the wind did blow

Sunset Yarnell Arizona

I watched this out my window

so much better than TV

crystals add a sparkle

just the way it ought to be

Sunset Yarnell Arizona

The moment came to crescendo

with a glow that lifted me

it doesn’t get much better

than a sunset with a tree

Sunset Yarnell Arizona

All too soon twas over

so I’m glad I took the pics

as every night is different

part of how I get my kicks

Mammatus clouds

Mammatus-clouds over Weaver Mountains Peeples Valley Arizona

Mammatocumulus look foreboding but are only the messengers preceding a coming storm or other extreme weather. Also known as mammatus clouds they are typically made up of ice crystals or water.

With 100% precipitation predicted to begin tonight through Friday night I’d say these Mammary clouds seen late Thursday afternoon are probably spot on.

I drive four hours, each way, to shop when living on the North Rim during the summer.  And during August monsoons that can mean a stormy drive with the sky an ever changing show. Rain along SR89 Arizona Along the Painted Desert I can see a storm coming from far away. Rain Painted Desert SR89 Arizona And of course I see the storm while it’s dumping on me. Stormy sky over Vermilion & Echo Cliffs SR89 Arizona Still rather gray approaching the Vermilion and Echo Cliffs. Stormy sky over Colorado River from Navajo Bridge Marble Canyon Arizona A dry stop at Navajo Bridge shows more storm across the sky. Stormy side mirror view SR89A Arizona

But continuing towards the Kaibab Plateau I seem to be leaving the storm behind. House Rock Valley SR89A Arizona With almost clear sky over House Rock Valley. Clouds over the meadows SR67 South Kaibab National Forest Arizona Then hard to say if it will stay away once driving across the meadows.  Almost home.

First color

This is the first color I’ve seen at sunset since my return to Yarnell almost two weeks ago.  That’s because the wonderful fall skies have been a typical cloudless brilliant blue so sunset has been uneventful.

Crazy clouds over Weaver Mts Yarnell Arizona

But I knew when these crazy bunch of clouds began to glow as the sun retreated below the ridge that a show was forthcoming.

Then the first color was rather subdued although nicely accenting the gossamer clouds.

Yet the lower sun bounced off the building clouds highlighting their bubbly shapes.

Followed by, low and behold, an eruption of rays.

And a golden dance upon the ridge top that bid the day adieu.

The clouds, a sign that winter approaches.

Symphony of the Canyons North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona 2013

Look and listen.  It’s hard to improve on a Grand Canyon sunset with Symphony of the Canyons.

Every August since 1995 the Kanab Symphony performs at the North Rim’s Grand Lodge.  Made up of members both young and old, pharmacist Kortney Stirland has led musicians from Kanab and surrounding communities for 25 years entertaining around the world.

Here’s a clip of Amazing Grace played at the North Rim August 2013.

Sunset from Cape Royal North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Knowing the road would be closed the next day I rushed out after work to experience and photograph the last sunset of the season from Cape Royal, a most excellent viewpoint of Grand Canyon from the North Rim.

Not even taking time to change clothes, I threw a pink top on with my green uniform pants.

Turned out not to be the best disguise as I’d sent several visitors out there ahead of me so they knew I am a Ranger.

No matter, this sunset put on a Grand show for everyone.

And I hung out to the very end.

Yes, it’s a bummer that visitors and employees will not be able to drive to this overlook, but then roads do have to be repaved once in a while.  Plus there are several other viewpoints still accessible before the road closure like Point Imperial, Vista Encantada and Roosevelt Point where the road block is set.
